What is Expanded Metal Lath?
Expanded metal is a type of sheet metal that has been cut and stretched to form regular patterns (often diamond-shaped) of material in a metal mesh. Because the material is flattened, the metal stays in one piece, making it stronger than equivalently weighted chicken wire.
Properties
Shot peening parts Shot peening involves bombarding a part with small particles of glass, metal, or ceramic to modify the surface properties of the part. Using expanded metal in the basket allows the particles used in the shot peening process to reach the part being modified, yet the basket itself is strong enough to withstand repeated exposure to the process.
Beam parts It is a similar process to shot peening, but smaller particles can be used to decontaminate and/or polish as well as alter the surface properties of the part. Metal mesh is useful because of its incredible durability and can withstand extended use in this heavy-duty application.
Parts organization and stacking Made from sturdy 316 stainless steel, expanded metal lath are extremely durable compared to wire mesh baskets. It is useful for organizing finished products waiting for delivery and drying between processes.
Degrease parts and brackets Many vapor degreasing processes use a highly corrosive solution heated to boiling point to break down and liquefy stubborn contaminants such as machine oils/greases so that they can flow off the parts being degreased.
Camp fire safe When designed for this purpose, these lath are usually constructed in layers and have an open outer shell to prevent heavy debris from hitting the internal sealed container.
Storage of heavy metal parts Several auto parts manufacturers and companies in the aerospace industry use stainless steel expanded metal laths to hold their heaviest metal components as it moves from one process to the next.
